Digital Twins
The retailer, which operates over 3,000 Vision Centers, said it is upping the number of frames which customers can try on virtually and buy online.
Walmart introduced its virtual prescription glasses on Walmart.com and the Walmart app back in February last year with 750 styles available. By the end of this May that number is expected to have grown to an eye-popping 1,700-plus.
Customers just have to click a ‘Try them on’ flag on the product page, which then takes a scan of their face and reveals how good or how awkward they look wearing their chosen glasses.
As part of the process, Walmart uses 3D data and advanced algorithms to create a digital twin of eyewear frames.
Audio Glasses
It is also highlighting the availability of its audio glasses. The retailer now sells EssilorLuxottica Nuance Audio Glasses, which combine prescription-ready eyewear with an invisible, open-ear hearing tool for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.
It is also launching Eureka! daily contact lenses in its private brand portfolio for astigmatism for order in stores and online for $69.86. This Walmart claims is a fifth cheaper than the average national brand.
“These launches represent where retail vision is headed: seamlessly blending style, tech and affordability,” said David Reitnauer, VP of health & wellness, Walmart.
The retailer has its own sights on capturing a growing market. The optical industry in the U.S. achieved a total market value of $68.3 billion in 2024, growing 2.7 percent from 2023.
Indeed, more than 240 million adults in the United States, or 92% of the population, regularly use some form of eyewear.
